Senior Staff

Mike Gurtler
Member/Manager & Senior Consultant
Mike has been working with youth-serving organizations for over 25 years. He began his career in Resident Camping and held a variety of program and administrative positions before becoming a YMCA CEO in 1994. After a successful term as CEO, Mike joined the national YMCA staff as a safety & risk management consultant with YMCA Services Corporation (YSC) in 2000. Before leaving YUSA in April of 2007 Mike held the position of Director of Risk Management Services for YSC. In this position his duties included providing strategic risk management direction for the organization and working closely with YMCAs throughout the country.
As the director he led the team of consultants that worked directly with the member associations of the YMCA Insurance Program. Mike was instrumental in developing the Lifeguard Rescue Ready Program and the resident camp review program. He also coordinated regular communication efforts which included the semimonthly Risky Business e-newsletter, timely Safety Reminders, annual Hot Topics, as well as serving as the moderator for the YMCA Safety & Risk Management Discussion Board. Mike was effective in developing proactive and current resources for YMCAs and was often recruited to provide presentations and training workshops.
Mike brings a long career in non-profit work to his risk management efforts providing the experience and understanding that allows Safe-Wise to be both practical and insightful as it strengthens the safety practices of organizations. He holds the prestigious Associate of Risk Management certification.

Christopher Mogridge
Member/Manager & Senior Consultant
Chris began his career in aquatics and has been a professional for 39 years. His early career was spent in program administration and later as the Aquatics Coordinator for the YMCA of Greater New York. Chris has been CEO for the Tarrytown YMCA, the YMCA of Bangor and for the Norwalk YMCA. He joined the Y-USA staff as a Safety and Risk Management consultant with YMCA Services Corporation in 2002. In this position he provided direct risk management consulting services to YMCAs in the North East and took a leadership role in the development and implementation of the YMCA Services Lifeguard Rescue Ready program.
Chris brings an extensive and varied background to risk management; he exhibits the practical experience and knowledge that allows Safe-Wise to provide a realistic and intuitive approach as it strengthens the safety practices of organizations. Chris is a YMCA Senior Director and holds National YMCA Faculty and American Red Cross Water Safety and CPR Pro Instructor credentials.
Mike and Chris founded Safe-Wise Consulting in June of 2007 and have since nurtured the company into a premiere provider of risk management services to youth-serving agencies across the US.
Regional Staff
Safe-Wise maintains a cadre of regional consulting staff that can assist organizations with their risk management efforts. All regional staff consultants have been recruited because of their successful experience, insightful consulting skills and their risk management knowledge.

William Starmer
Western Region Consultant
The YMCA has been Bill’s career for over 40 years. He began his professional work in Lansing, Michigan and later moved to East Lansing working on the development of a small branch into a full facility. Bill then worked within the Phoenix YMCA system beginning as a Branch Executive and ending his time there as a District Vice President overseeing and supervising all aspects of 4 branches. He then served as the President and CEO of the YMCA of Southern Nevada before formally retiring from full-time YMCA service in 1999. Since retiring, Bill has been asked by the YMCA of the USA to assist with a number of interim assignments and also joined YMCA Services Corporation in 2000 as a Safety & Risk Management Consultant and Western Region Coordinator.
Bill brings significant resources and experience to Safe-Wise from facility development and construction to risk management consulting with many organizations. Additionally he has extensive experience in assisting troubled associations in their turnaround efforts, helping them implement effective policies and procedures, solve risk management issues and incorporate efficient management solutions. His commitment to well-run and maintained organizations is a cornerstone of his consulting efforts.
